My Driving Question is: How does inquiry based instruction and a positive math mindset increase student performance in the mathematics classroom? My original Driving Question focused solely on Bridges in Mathematics curriculum and assessments, and has evolved into looking at the impact of inquiry and a math mindset as in the mathematics classroom in a more general sense. The audience for my capstone is fellow educators. Specifically, educators looking to implement inquiry and a positive math mindset in their upper elementary mathematics classroom.
Capstone Review:
Jen Ellison has a fantastic site! Right away I learned that she focused on teaching students higher math skills through teaching gamification along with critical thinking skills. She had a clear graphic and title (Game On) that indicated this. The audience for this site is teachers who want to engage and motivate their students to succeed through collaboration via game-based education. In addition to gamification, Ellison also taught her students to develop digital skills and embrace a growth mindset. Jen Ellison was highly effective in presenting this information. Her Home page has a clear outline of what her study was about, including an informative introduction video. I thought the data she displayed on her home page effectively supported why this study was effective/important. She had clear links to: Lessons, How-To’s, Assessments, and References. I really like the graphics she chose that led you to these links (I also love how she got her principal involved in some of her gamification lesson videos!) This was a great site to view as a “How-To” for our capstones.
Saelee’s audience is teachers who are seeking information on how to use digital tools to support personalized learning in order to prepare students for the jobs in the 21st century. I particularly liked how she used a “grabber” geared toward teachers on her home page by asking, “Teachers, are you tired of falling behind the cursed pacing guide?...” This immediately made me want to read more to find out how her data supported the solution to her question. Her video and data on the home page supported why her Essential Question is important. I thought her link to NapaLearns on the home page was a great idea as well. Under Learn More I thought Saelee’s How/Why format of her digital tools was really effective. I thought her Inspiration page had powerful images, videos, resources, and data. I thought her About the Author was very impressive. I liked her timeline, and reflection on the TPACK Model in particular. Saelee was effective in presenting her learning on each page, and her project was very helpful to view!
